An HDU provides a step-down service for ICU and caters for critically ill patients with lower complexity and risk that do not require a 1 patient to 1 nurse ratio. For patients with health conditions between the levels found in the ICU and the general ward are accommodated in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) for more extensive care, intensive observations, treatments, and nursing care though rather minimal than in the ICU.
